What is KYBELLA Treatment?
KYBELLA is a medication prescribed by your doctor or plastic surgeon to eliminate excess fat beneath the chin. It’s an injection of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the human body. Deoxycholic acid assists the body with breaking down and absorbing dietary fat.
Technically referred to as submental fat and often called a “double chin” by patients, excess fat under the chin can have many causes. In some people, submental fat is present throughout their lives. For others, it only occurs in older age.
Some of the leading causes of submental fat under the chin include:
- Aging
- Weight gain
- Genetic factors
How do KYBELLA injections work?
Deoxycholic acid is a substance found in the body that helps break down fat. When injected beneath the chin, it targets and breaks down submental fat at the injection site to help the body naturally get rid of it. Once fat cells are broken down and absorbed by the body, they can no longer store fat. This process minimizes the presence of under-chin fat. Your doctor may advise multiple treatments to reach your desired results. At least one month should separate each treatment, and you shouldn’t undergo more than six treatments in total. The process at Dr. Watts office is so streamlined and simple, it almost felt too easy. My consultation and pre-op appointment were very quick and I was slightly nervous because I didn't spend much time with Dr.Watt prior to the surgery. Dr. G, Kasey, and the rest of the team are all amazing! Well…. I don’t even know where to begin. This by far has been the best experience with Dr. Watts office and staff. I had my own personal experience and ended up developing some blood after my breast augmentation and when I tell you the staff acted very quick and I was back in surgery just 2 days later and everything was taken care of. How does KYBELLA work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in KYBELLA, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the submental area. After the fat cells are eliminated, these cells cannot regenerate. Therefore, additional treatments shouldn't be necessary as soon as you have reached your desired outcome. However, the remaining cells can still grow in size, that is why it's important to maintain a healthy weight to preserve your results.
Can KYBELLA be used to treat other areas of the body?
No, it cannot. Currently, KYBELLA may only be used to treat the area below the chin to effectively reduce the appearance of a double chin. KYBELLA hasn't been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for any other areas of the face or body.
Am I eligible for a KYBELLA treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a KYBELLA treatment. You must be at least 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you should not have any infection in or around the treatment site. Before your treatment begins, you are encouraged to be open about your medical history and health concerns with your injector so that they can determine if you may be at risk for an adverse reaction from the treatment.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
In your initial consultation, a customized treatment plan will be developed to address your needs and cosmetic goals. Usually, patients receive between two and four KYBELLA treatments before achieving their goals. KYBELLA appointments must also be spaced about 30 days apart. You should not get any more than six injections in total.
