Who can have this surgery?

Women of all ages can have breast reduction surgery, even those still in their teenage years. If you decide to undergo the procedure before fully developed breasts are present, you may need a follow-up procedure later. Reduction surgery may present heightened risks for smokers, people with diabetes or heart issues, or obese people. It’s also important to consider that breast reduction surgery may leave you with some scarring on the breasts.

Women who plan to have children may want to wait for breast reduction surgery. It can be more challenging to breastfeed after this procedure. Additionally, if you’re planning to lose weight in the future, you should likely wait to achieve a healthy weight that you intend to maintain before a breast reduction.

After a successful breast reduction procedure, you’ll likely experience improved self-esteem, reduced pain in the upper body, and a greater ability to participate in physical activity. Contact Watt Plastic Surgery today to learn if breast reduction surgery is right for you.

What is Breast Reduction surgery?

Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammaplasty. This surgical procedure can help women achieve a proportionate breast size to eliminate pain or discomfort and help with emotional stress.

Breasts that are very large in proportion to a woman's body can negatively impact physical and emotional wellbeing. The technical name for disproportionately large breasts is macromastia. Physical discomfort from macromastia caused by the weight of the breasts and can include:

  • Inhibited ability to move
  • Chronic shoulder, neck, and back pain
  • Nerve pain
  • Irritated, chafed skin beneath the breasts

Breast reduction solves medical concerns, including macromastia, but it's also for cosmetic reasons. Women may opt for cosmetic breast reduction surgery to improve their body image or help fit into clothes.

After surgery, you will be monitored closely in our quiet recovery room and then discharged home to begin the healing process. A small, tube-like draining device will most likely be inserted near the surgical site to reduce swelling and bleeding. A medical sports bra may be recommended for a few days to improve blood flow to the breasts and provide added support during the immediate recovery. Patients should also plan to sleep on their back with their upper body slightly elevated to encourage proper healing and reduce the risk of complications, including stretching or pulling on healing incisions. In a month or so, patients should begin to notice their breasts settling and their final results taking shape. Still, postoperative swelling can remain for several months. After you have fully healed from breast reduction surgery, you will be able to enjoy your new contours, improved comfort, boosted confidence, and more.

If I could give Dr Watt and his team six stars, I would! I found Dr Watt from a friend who also used their services, and from the moment I got there until my last appointment I have felt so cared for. I have wanted a breast augmentation for more than 10 years but I was afraid of not getting the results I wanted. After a consultation and a referral from one of his patients I finally decided to book the surgery and I could not be happier with my results. The teams is always super helpful and supportive and friendly of course! I had a few questions post op and someone was always there to give me an answer. I never had to worry about anything. They took great care of me! I had a lip flip done a month ago and it was an amazing experience. She explained literally everything to me I asked about, which was so comforting. I told her I freak out with needles so made sure I felt good the whole time. It was quick and as painless as possible. I can’t wait to book another appointment with this team! The truly cared about every step of the process and about my care and recovery. Best place to get any kind of plastic surgery/ treatments. I finally look the way I’ve always felt I should and I can’t thank them enough for my results and being so amazing about the whole process. Definitely will be returning. ♥️

Dr. Watt and his entire team are amazing! From my very first phone call, my last post-op appointment, and everything in between they were exceptional. I had a primary breast augmentation and was always very self conscious of my breasts. After breastfeeding two sweet babies, Dr. Watt has definitely made me feel 1000% better! You will not find a better surgeon and team.

When I say they knocked my breast augmentation expectations out of the park, I am not exaggerating. Dr. Girardot is not only an extremely sweet human, but AMAZING at what she does. I will forever reccomend her and this practice to anyone who asks, although my breasts look so natural not many people know!! The level of customization they execute in their practice is unmatched. Don’t go anywhere else!!!

Will my nipples be moved?

Usually, the nipples and areola will be shifted up to a central position during the surgery. If a large amount of breast tissue and skin needs to be removed, your nipple-areola complex may need to be moved. Dr. Watt will select a technique like the anchor incision so the nipple and areola can easily move higher. It is also possible to perform an areolatome to reduce the size of the areolas. We will explain your options at your consultation before Dr. Watt helps you decide on the best plan to achieve your goals.

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery can affect your ability to breastfeed. Although some women may still be able to breastfeed after a reduction, other women cannot. It is difficult to know whether your breast reduction will cause you problems with breastfeeding. This is why Dr. Watt suggests that patients be done with breastfeeding before considering breast reduction surgery.

Can my breasts re-grow after surgery?

After breast reduction surgery, your breasts may get bigger or smaller with dramatic weight changes. This is why it's helpful to be at a healthy, stable weight that's easy for you to maintain before your surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Watt will talk to you about the best ways to prepare for your reduction and what you can do afterward to help make sure your results last.
