At Watt Plastic Surgery in Tampa, we offer breast lift surgery as a solution to aesthetic breast concerns. Learn more about the benefits of this procedure below.
What Is a Breast Lift?
The technical term is mastopexy. It’s a surgical treatment used to raise and reshape the breasts.
In this procedure, excess skin is removed from the breast area. The breast tissue is then reshaped and repositioned to set the breasts in a higher position. This also involves tightening the tissue surrounding the skin to support the new contour of the breasts.
This lift is a cosmetic procedure. Women may consider having the procedure to boost their self-confidence or achieve their cosmetic goals. It may also be used to offset sagging breasts, nipples that point downward, or even enlarged areolas.
There are multiple natural factors that can cause sagging breasts, including:
- Aging skin
Breasts lose their firm, flexible quality with age, often taking on a sagging or drooping appearance. This is in part due to the fact that our skin becomes thinner and less elastic as we age.
Gravity pulls down on the breasts. Over time, this can lead to stretched ligaments in the breasts, causing a drooped appearance.
- Changes in weight
Fluctuations in weight can change the size of your breasts. When breasts become larger due to weight gain, the breast skin becomes stretched. Stretched or loose breast skin can cause the breasts to sag.
Breasts become fuller, larger, and heavier during pregnancy. This causes the ligaments that support the breasts to stretch, creating a sagging appearance.
- Genetic factors
Your genetics may, to some degree, impact the elasticity of your skin. Some people are more prone than others to a loss of elasticity in the skin with age.
What are the Benefits?
This procedure may provide benefits to interested patients, including:

What Can I Expect After?
After the procedure, you’ll likely be advised to take prescription pain medications to manage discomfort. Swelling and bruising from the procedure typically lasts for around two weeks, while numbness in the breasts may last for six weeks.
You should avoid certain physical activities after, including lifting and bending. It’s recommended to sleep on your back or side, rather than your stomach, to avoid pressure on the breasts. You should also avoid sexual activity for about one to two weeks after.
